If you’re anything like me, you start thinking about gift shopping in October, buy an item or two in November, and in December go into full panic shopping. Many years ago, I would find myself at the mall shopping with the men on Christmas Eve (sorry men – you know it’s true). I would wander aimlessly and end up choosing gifts that were probably useless as not a lot of thought went into them. My younger sister always has her shopping done in July, and every gift is so thoughtful. I’m guessing she starts shopping in January – smart woman.

Times have changed, and now that I’m a mom, I have to be much more planned out in my approach. I have lists written on my phone, in my planner, on my laptop, and on Post-its, of all the people to shop for and a checklist for when they are completed. Does this make the shopping happen any faster? No. Does it make me feel like I’m accomplishing something? Yes. The joy of putting that little check mark on one of my many lists is beyond satisfying.

Every year, I want to find the perfect gift for each friend or family member—something I know they are going to love. It’s not easy, especially when you are on a budget.
