Launching My Online Fashion Boutique: Lessons Learned

I did it—I truly did it! After a year filled with blogging, stepping into the role of an Amazon Influencer, and launching my own Etsy shop, I have finally achieved my lifelong dream—owning and operating my very own online fashion boutique- Nothing to Wear Collective!

I’m writing this blog to share the journey of the steps I took to launch my project. It wasn’t always easy, and I spent countless hours navigating through challenges, but each mistake has been a valuable lesson. After all, that’s what learning and growing is all about—right?

The moment I made my decision, an anxious feeling swept over me. I found myself daydreaming about my own website, tailored for sophisticated women seeking unique and specific styling for their wardrobes. The exhaustion of promoting others—like Amazon and Etsy—was wearing me thin. I needed to breathe life into my vision, and it all started right here with this blog.

So, I got to work, excited about the incredible journey ahead of me! I dove in head first and embraced the grind every day, making the most of every moment between my full-time job and my roles as a mom and wife—though that didn’t leave a lot of extra time. Fueled by passion, I found joy in the process, often sacrificing sleep because I was so eager to build and create. Every late night and hour spent was a step forward, and I couldn’t wait to see what was ahead!

The first step in starting an online business is to create an LLC with a unique business name and to apply for a reseller’s license, ensuring compliance with your state’s specific requirements.

While I was waiting for those items, which took about two long weeks, I felt a determination to teach myself how to build my own website. I quickly realized that I was no tech genius, but I never imagined my skills would be comparable to that of a first grader. Fueled by passion, I dove into purchasing a domain from GoDaddy and integrating it with a WordPress theme I was already familiar with from my blogging. I used a free template to kickstart my website, and let me tell you, it was a labor of love. Many late nights, my eyes burning, my mind feeling utterly drained, yet I continued on. Countless hours were spent combing through the internet for how-to videos and reaching out to ChatGPT to conquer some of the bigger obstacles. Finally, I reached a point where the site was beginning to take shape, and my next challenge was to integrate my products, even though I still didn’t have any products yet.

Next, I started on the journey of researching suppliers, both wholesale and dropshipping, not fully grasping the time it would consume. I was determined to find high-quality clothing and accessory options that weren’t available on Amazon. After a lot of effort, I finally found suppliers I’m truly pleased with. I now rely on Faire for wholesale and Trendsi for dropshipping. Faire’s insider program is fantastic, featuring a program that allows you to have products on hand for 60 days before they charge you—this is applicable only for your first order from a vendor. It’s an excellent strategy for a boutique, especially when you’re uncertain about what will sell. Plus, they offer free returns on that initial vendor order within the 60-day frame, which is such a generous offer! I chose Trendsi as they seem to provide higher-quality items compared to other dropshipping companies, though the downside is a 5-10 business day shipping time due to international deliveries. They do introduce new arrivals every weekday, which is a definite bonus. But here’s where I faced one of my biggest challenges, and I hope my experience can help others avoid a similar fate. I had my website and my products lined up, but integrating the two turned out to be a significant challenge. The site I had built did not connect directly with my suppliers, meaning I had to manually track inventory for dropshipping and upload products myself—a task that would consume countless hours each day. It was disheartening after months of effort, and I found myself at a standstill. If my experience can save even one person from feeling this frustration, then it’s worth sharing. Please ensure your website and suppliers can integrate directly; it will spare you from a lot of unnecessary stress.

So, after picking myself up off the floor once more, I got to work on an exciting new website that would integrate seamlessly. I chose Shopify and fell in love with a beautiful theme—though I invested in it, I knew it was worth every penny. Learning to build a website on this platform was surprisingly easier than I expected, although it still required a good amount of time. Despite some challenging days, my passion continually inspired me. I was determined to keep going—this was my dream, and I was committed to making it a reality!

I finally built the site, and now I can seamlessly integrate products directly from my suppliers to my website! Once the products are showcased online, I then create item names, descriptions, determine competitive prices, and carefully chosen categories, and deciding on the marketing for each item. The most exciting part of this adventure was curating the products—it felt like a shopping spree, and surprisingly, it even helped me manage my spending. However, the daunting task of how much time it would take to complete every carefully selected item, consumed countless hours of my enthusiasm.

To prepare for shipping, gather essential supplies including a label printer, scale, poly bags in various sizes, tissue and stickers, thank you notes, shopping bags, and jewelry and shoe bags. An inexpensive shipping cart can help organize these items. Most supplies are available on Amazon, where you can register for a business account for better pricing. Additionally, Canva can be used to create business cards and postcards featuring popular items to share with contacts.

Now that my product is on my website, I have successfully figured out the layouts and page themes, and I was eager to launch. In hindsight, I realize I should have dedicated more time to the launch strategy. After months of meticulous preparation, my impatience led to ineffective planning. I chose to launch on the 4th of July, mistakenly believing it would be an opportune day for a celebratory debut. However, this decision backfired, as people were occupied with parties and barbecues rather than online shopping. While I received a few sales from friends and family, the launch ultimately fell short due to my lack of strategic foresight. I now recommend that, when launching an online store, research peak shopping times, such as October, November, and December. Additionally, it is crucial to post product photos and teasers in the days or weeks leading up to the launch, along with building brand awareness and networking beforehand. Otherwise, a store may appear abruptly on platforms like Facebook without recognition or credible reviews, causing potential customers to hesitate before spending their money. This was yet another challenge I created for myself due to my impatience.

I’m about 6 weeks in now, having had decent sales mainly from friends and family. I’m hosting an official launch party at my house with a pop-up boutique featuring my branding, which will be my next post.

Also, during this time, I made what I’m sure many would call a bold life decision to quit my corporate job and pursue this full time. I’ve been working since I was 14, and the only real break I took was when I had the kids. I can’t shake off the guilt that comes with this choice, but then again, how do you ever know if you don’t take a risk? Deep down, I felt I had to make this leap of faith, but I can’t help but wonder if it’s really the right move. Thankfully, my husband has a solid salary to support us while I attempt to get this off the ground. I’ve given a month’s notice at work, so I’m at my job for now. I’ll share an update on my transition from full-time career mom to full-time entrepreneur mom after I’ve had a few months to see how this actually goes.

Launching a project like this is challenging; only commit if you’re truly passionate, as many may quit due to the time committal and research needed. Passion sustains you through difficulties and mistakes, so you must learn to persevere and try repeatedly.

This is just the beginning of my journey—I have countless chapters ahead with experiences to come and share with you. I understand that this path won’t always be smooth, but it will undoubtedly be worth every ounce of effort. How many people are truly fortunate enough to pursue a career that fuels their passion? I feel immensely grateful for this chance, and one day, I look forward to sharing my inspiring success story with you!

Here’s to taking risks and following your dreams!
